My whole life I have dreamt of living in a place where I can be completely free. A place that has everything I need, where everyone has the same opportunities and is treated equally. I have travelled the world looking for this place. I have spent money and time and resources. And with each place I go and each person I meet, I realize more and more that my ultimate goal in life is to be free. I want to own my time. I want to decide the paths I want to take, I want to be wherever I want to be. I want to look back when I’m old, and know that I’ve spent my life indulging in the things I love and learning the things I want to learn. That I have spent a life dedicated to what makes me be the best version of myself, and for me that is exploration.
This is the reason I moved to Iceland 3 years ago. I wanted to be in a place where I could be completely free. And I wanted to be surrounded by people who were looking for the same rush. That feeling of leaving everything behind and heading to somewhere new, where you don’t know anybody and nobody knows you. I am comfortable being uncomfortable. I wanted to be surrounded by people who came from different paths of life but that shared one thing: not being afraid. I don’t get why people are afraid. I was lucky enough to have been brought up in an environment where my curiosity was encouraged. My parents are the type of people who would do anything to see me accomplish my dreams, no matter how crazy they seemed. No matter if they didn’t understand where I was coming from. They always told me I could do anything and be anything. And I have no doubt in my mind that I can because my mind is silent; I don’t pay much attention to people’s opinions (maybe I should from time to time), but that has enabled me to not be afraid of anything. I want to succeed but I don’t mind if I fail. I’m not interested in material things. The end to my goals is not having a house, buying a car, or having money. I see business as a game I’m willing to play but I’m not that interested in the final goal as much as I’m interested in the process. I don’t care much about what I achieve, what I care about is how I achieve it.
I’m coming back to Honduras in a few days, a place that is without a doubt, scary. It is a place full of hungry people willing to do whatever it takes to make it. It is a place full of people who are willing to try because not trying means not only losing, but dying. And I admire that and I’m encouraged by that. I want to prove that you can make it no matter where you come from and I want to prove that there is nothing stopping you. We live in a time where we have all the tools needed to achieve our goals. And even though some of us where born in a place without many advantages, we can still make use of these tools in order to win. I’m interested in people who want to win. And you can win through practicality. You can win through self-awareness. The problem with most people is not being unaware of what they want, but being too afraid to pursue it. They are afraid of what someone else might think or say. They are afraid their parents might think they are a failure for not following the path they followed.
Well, it is not a good idea listening to other people. What is a good idea, is listening yo yourself.
Sometimes the best thing to do, the most practical thing to do, is to silence your mind. Drown the noise. Do you. Try new things out in an effort to explore the best versions of yourself. Self awareness is the one thing nobody will take away from you. Do whatever you have to do to get that thing that gives you more options. That gets you to that spot you want to be in.
Before, I talked about a place where I could be completely free. I’ve come to realize this place is not a country, or even a tangible space. Instead it is an abstract but vey real place. This place is the internet. We have before us the most powerful tool humanity has ever seen and yet so many people underestimate its power. The internet does not care about who you are, or where you come from, or whether you have a dictator as a president. In this virtual place we are all the same. Whoever has the attention, wins. And the attention of the world right now, is in our phones. So I just want to encourage whoever reading this to make the best of it. We have before us access to endless information, more than we’ve ever had in the history of humankind. Don’t hold back. Question everything just because you can. Don’t take anything as truth just because it comes from your parents, a teacher, or societal norms. We live in the most exciting time for humankind yet, and we have to seize it.
Those of us who understand the direction our world is taking, and embrace it open to change and unafraid, will win.
